    2014 Chevrolet Volt Base Model

The 2014 Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) that offers the flexibility of all-electric driving with the reassurance of a gasoline engine when the battery runs low. At the time, it was one of the most innovative vehicles on the road, delivering impressive fuel efficiency without the range anxiety of a fully electric car. The base model, simply known as the Volt, came well-equipped with advanced tech and comfort features.

    Powertrain & Performance

The 2014 Volt uses a unique drivetrain that combines an electric motor with a gasoline-powered generator. The electric motor produces 149 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, offering smooth and responsive acceleration from a standstill.

On a full charge, the Volt can travel around 38 miles purely on electric power more than enough for most daily commutes. Once the battery is depleted, the 1.4-liter 4-cylinder gas engine kicks in, acting as a generator to power the electric motor. This extends total range to over 300 miles, seamlessly switching between power sources with no driver input required.

Driving dynamics are tight and composed, with a low center of gravity due to the battery placement. The Volt offers a quiet, refined ride especially in electric mode, where engine noise is virtually non-existent.

    Fuel Economy

Fuel economy is where the Volt shines. In electric-only mode, it achieves the equivalent of 98 MPGe. When operating as a regular hybrid with the gas engine, fuel economy is about 37 MPG combined.

Charging is easy using a standard 120V household outlet (about 1012 hours) or a 240V charging station (about 4 hours).

    Interior & Comfort

Inside, the 2014 Volt feels modern and forward-thinking, with a mix of hard and soft-touch materials and a digital instrument cluster. The center console is dominated by a color touchscreen interface and touch-sensitive controls.

Seating is for four passengers two in front and two in the rear due to the placement of the battery pack down the center of the car. Front seats are supportive and comfortable for long drives, and the cabin feels spacious despite the Volts compact size.

The cargo area, accessible via the rear hatch, offers around 10.6 cubic feet of space, expandable with the rear seats folded.

    Technology & Features

Even in its base trim, the 2014 Volt came well-equipped. Standard features include:

    Keyless entry and push-button start

    Automatic climate control

    7-inch color touchscreen display

    Bluetooth connectivity

Six-speaker audio system with USB port and satellite radio

    OnStar telematics with turn-by-turn navigation

    Rearview camera

Remote start via key fob or smartphone app

The Volt also includes regenerative braking, which helps recharge the battery while slowing down, and multiple drive modes (Normal, Sport, Mountain, and Hold) to customize performance and energy use.

    • The most amazingly economical car I've ever owned

What can I say - my 2012 Volt is the best car I've ever owned, foreign or domestic. It's also the most economical car I've ever owned - period. Comfortable, fun to drive, and cheap to keep. After 133K miles my total maintenance runs to 3 oil changes, one engine air filter, one set of new tires and tire rotations. Period. And I've saved over 3,800 gallons of gas in the meantime. Add it up - while expensive to buy (I bought early), it will cost far less than almost any other car by the time I reach 5 years of ownership. What? Battery worries? Sorry, the battery is just as strong today as the day I bought it 3-1/2 years ago. Not sure what to more to say except this car is a keeper (although the new Gen 2 Volt's are sure tempting!) Hmmm, maybe it's worth noting that I'm a super commuter and make a round trip to work of 186 miles every day on an average of 1.9 gallons of gas. Around town driving seldom uses any gas at all. Totally awesome. One last note though - avoid use of Sport Mode when the CHP are around - it's hard to behave when you're having fun.

Bought new, at least for tax claim purposes, MY2013 in August 2014, so I've owned it for 6 years and 72.8k of its 74k miles (loaner). OE tires lasted ~46k miles, rotated tires per recommended intervals. Regular oil changes, 5 year coolant change, fluids, and the accessory drive belt are the only maintenance/repair items, as well as the driver door window regulator failed at ~5 years. I've ran this car as both a full EV and as a pure 'ranged-extended electric vehicle'/EREV mode for several years for each based on home/apartment/work access to charging. There is no such thing as range anxiety, it's an inexpensive to operate utilitarian car, the hatch has been super useful. I only ran the car on premium fuel and found the typical MPG slightly above the EPA combined of 37, while the EV range regularly exceeds the 38 miles--more like 41, but environment & drive style play major factors. YMMV. No noticeable degradation in the battery after a life in Florida. I love the driving experience of the car, especially when in EV mode. Highly recommend for used buyers looking to experience EV inexpensively. Be aware that work on the high voltage battery pack would likely require a Chevy dealership and most only have one EV technician, some don't have any...be sure to check this if you're in a less dense dealer coverage area.
